Building Codes require that the Occupancy and Use of a building be classified into one of several groups, based on the primary purpose of the building, structure, or portion thereof. Each "Use Group" has similar hazards and risks for building occupants. Different construction standards are applied to each Use Group.

Use Groups are one of several ways to categorize a permit. Other ways to categorize a permit are discussed in the article Categorize a Permit.

Create a new Use Group or Edit an Existing One

To create new a Use Group or edit an existing one, go to Edit > Use Groups.

This opens the Use Groups window. To add a new Use Group, click the Plus button. To edit an existing Use Group, double click it's line in the table.

This opens the Use Group window. Enter the Use Group and provide a Description that includes example uses. Click Save when done.

Delete or Archive an Occupancy Type

When a Use Group is no longer used, it should be archived, rather than deleted. To archive an Use Group, click the Archive checkbox and then click Save.

WARNING: Only delete a Use Group if it's not used on any permit. Deleting an Use Group that is in use will remove it from all permits in the database.
