Permit Sub-Types help to organize and categorize permits. This enables quicker searching for a specific permit and allows fine-grained reports and analysis.

You should create enough sub-types to allow meaningful data reporting and trend analysis, but don't over-do it! A long list of sub-types is difficult to scroll through and may not add any meaningful data.

In addition to the organizational aspect of sub-types, they also include the ability to insert a predetermined standard comment into a permit's comments section.

Add or Edit Sub-Types and Comments

When considering how many sub-types to use, think about creating meaningful categories for reports and watching for trends. Too many or too few sub-types won't create helpful data.

To add or edit sub-types, begin from the Permit Sub-Types list at Edit > Permit Sub-Types.

This opens the Permit Sub-Types window, showing a list of all permit sub-types.

To open and edit an existing sub-type, double click it in the list. To create a new sub-type, click the Plus button.

WARNING: Only make minor edits to existing Permit Sub-Types. Any edits made will be applied to all permits in the database with that Permit Sub-Type.

WARNING: Do not delete existing Permit Sub-Types. Deleting a Sub-Type will blank out that data for all permits in the database with that Permit Sub-Type. Use the Archive checkbox instead of deleting.

Select the Permit Type using the drop down selector. Create a name for the Permit Sub-Type. Optionally, enter the text for the standard Comment. When finished, click Save.

Insert Sub-Type Comments Into a Permit

To insert the Sub-Type Comment into a permit's Comments section, begin from the Permit window and the General Info tab. After choosing the Sub-Type, click the Add Sub-Type Comment button. This will automatically add the predetermined standard comment into the Comments section of the permit. Click Save to save the changes to the permit.
