Violations can be broadly classified by the use of a Violation Type. They can be further classified by a Use Code. The Use Code is a reference to the specific code section for the violation. Use Codes are discussed in detail in this article.

The information below discusses methods to structure and customize the Violation Types in Permit Manager.

Structuring the List of Violation Types

The list of Violation Types can be structured in one of two ways.

Option 1 - Reference the Municipality's Code of Ordinances

The first option for structuring the Violation Type list is to use specific references to the municipality's Code of Ordinances. This type of list should use the same Section Numbers and Titles as the municipality's code. The list does not need to include all sections of the code, only the ones that will be used for violations in Permit Manager. If you choose this option, the Violation Type will be used in conjunction with the Violation Use Code to specify the code section of the violation.

The screenshot below shows an example of this type of Violation Type list.

Option 2 - General Violation Types

The second option for structuring the Violation Type list is to include a name for each of the violations that are most typically issued. With this option, the Violation Type may be used in conjunction with the Violation Use Code to specify the code section of the violation, but it doesn't need to be. The screenshot below shows an example of this type of list.

Creating and Editing the List of Violation Types

After choosing how to structure the list, customize the Violation Type list by going to Edit > Violation Types.

This opens the Violation Types window. Double click an existing Violation Type to edit it.

WARNING: Only make minor edits to existing Violation Types. Any edits made will be applied to all violations in the database with that Violation Type.

WARNING: Do not delete existing Violation Types. Deleting Violation Types will delete all violations in the database with that Violation Type. Use the Archive checkbox instead of deleting.

Click the Plus button to add a new Violation Type.

This opens a New Violation Type modal window.

Add the name of the new Violation Type and click Save. Continue in the same fashion to add more new Violation Types.
